DID YOU KNOW THAT YOU ARE AUTOMATICALLY COVERED BY NUGSS HEALTH AND DENTAL PLAN IF YOU ARE FULL TIME STUDENT IN SEPTEMBER?
NUGSS Health and Dental Plan will cover many services not covered by your basic medical service; prescription drugs, dental care, travel insurance, physiotherapy, massage therapy and others.
Why Health and Dental Plan?
NUGSS Health and Dental Plan is a group health and dental plan, and a collective decision enacted through a democratic process. By implementing a group health and dental plan in which all students are automatically enrolled, NUGSS was able to remove barriers regarding pre-existing conditions that would have excluded students who may need this coverage the most. The plan is mandatory and is similar to a corporate plan which is mandatory for all employees who join a specific company, except that the NUGSS Health and Dental Plan includes an opt-out mechanism. Is NUGSS Health and Dental Plan same as MSP?
The Medical Services Plan (MSP) insures medically required services provided by physicians and supplementary health care practitioners, laboratory services and diagnostic procedures. It is the most basic coverage provided by the British Columbia and is separate from NUGSS Health and Dental Plan. You are still required to pay for MSP in addition to NUGSS Extended Health and Dental Benefits. However, as a student, you might be able to qualify for MSP Premium Assistance Program and be exempt from paying MSP monthly fee for the duration of your studies. What are examples of differences between MSP Coverage and NUGSS Health and Dental Plan?
- MSP will cover your basic visit to a physician but NUGSS Health and Dental Plan will cover your prescription drugs prescribed by physician.
- MSP will cover your cast for a broken leg but it will not cover ambulance, crutches or wheelchair.
- MSP will not cover dental work such as cleanings, fillings, oral surgeries and so on.
- MSP will not cover your eye exams or your travel insurance.
Do I have to keep NUGSS Health and Dental Plan even if I am covered by a similar plan?
NO. You do not have to keep NUGSS plan if you can produce proof of coverage by similar extended benefits plan.
When can I opt out of NUGSS Health and Dental Plan?
You can opt out of NUGSS Health and Dental plan during the change of coverage period; usually first three weeks of Fall semester. For specific dates and information on opt out process please visit www.studentcare.net/works
